“Some women get everything. Some women get everything they deserve”

Amber is a social climber with a dubious past who has her gold digging heart set on the insanely wealthy Jackson Parrish. To get to Jackson she goes through his seemingly perfect  wife, Daphne Parrish. Amber is a cunning and manipulative, love to hate her type character. Daphne comes off as a very naive pushover and the man in the middle, well, he’s rich and handsome. (What else does a leading man need?)

The Last Mrs.Parrish is the debut book by sisters Lynne and Valerie Constantine, writing under the pseudonym Liv Constantine. Reese Witherspoon chose this book for her december book club read and I needed an easy -end of year- read.

Now, it should be mentioned that I’m not a big fan of novels with insanely rich people, smut and triangle drama  (50 shades of grey and twilight has ruined that for me, forever), I shudder at the awkward dialogue and stupidity of it all.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride of this one! Even if it does contain all the things I cringe at! So what made this one different? It’s a slow burn, and I enjoy it when the author takes their time telling the story without shortcuts. Too often these types of books rush through to get to the point, or the scenes are too boring and obvious. This one managed to walk the thin line of entertaining without tipping over to boring.

It does of course have the riches to take us on private planes, estates, yachts and designer shopping, but it’s not mindless rich dropping, it’s a description of Ambers dreams and wants. And maybe that’s why I like it, because Amber isn’t afraid to say that she wants those things and shamelessly go after them! Unlike the many other leading ladies that never care about or even want the money! (I’m looking at you Anastasia!)

The whole plot centers around these three characters, with a few guest characters coming and going along the way. And it just works! It’s sneaky and it’s drama, it’s funny and exciting. Will she manage to steal the husband? Will she get burned? I sacrificed a good night sleep to find out. It’s a fairly thick book, but it reads fast and I finished it in two days.

And while I’m not the biggest fan of the smut/mystery/romance genre, I would definitely recommend this one,  cause this one was fun!
